Ama Francis, a Climate Law Fellow at the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia Law School, has analyzed the legal authority of Kolkata’s Municipal Corporation (KMC) to enact action for reducing sources of air pollution in order to improve Kolkata’s air quality.
In the manuscript, “Legal Levers for Cleaner Air in Kolkata: An Assessment of Local Legal Authority,” which was published by the Sabin Center and is available online through the Social Science Research Network (SSRN), they provide several key recommendations for improving air quality in the city. These recommendations include: regulating the combustion of solid fuels for cooking, improving roadways to reduce road dust and vehicular emissions, limiting waste burning as a means of waste management, establishing a public awareness campaign in order to educated the public and reduce risk, and supporting public interest litigation in order to spur further government action.
